Applying to College: Tips on the Common App From U.S. News

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- To coincide with today's release of the Common Application's newest edition, U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings, published an updated guide with comprehensive advice for college applicants on how to best utilize this tool. The Common App is accepted by nearly 900 schools, and it allows prospective students to apply to multiple schools with just one application.

For students navigating this process, here are few tips to keep in mind:

Start early. Experts recommend beginning your application about six weeks before it's due. The newest edition of the Common App is available on Aug. 1 each year, allowing applicants time to get started before the academic year begins. The deadline to submit the completed application is 11:59 p.m. local time on Jan. 1.
Choose the essay prompt best suited to you. The Common App provides seven essay prompts to choose from, meaning students have some flexibility in determining the most effective way to represent themselves on paper.

Ask questions. The Common App provides 24/7 online technical assistance. If you're still stuck, ask your school counselor or reach out to the colleges you're applying to.

Announces Order From Solaris For 12 Fuel Cell Modules to Power Bolzano Buses

VANCOUVER, July 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ - Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) today announced a purchase order from Solaris Bus & Coach S.A. ("Solaris"; www.solarisbus.com), a leading European bus and trolleybus manufacturer and Ballard partner headquartered in Bolechowo, Poland, for 12 FCmove™-HD fuel cell modules to power 12 buses to be deployed with SASA Bolzano, the public transport operator in Bolzano, Italy under the Joint Initiative For Hydrogen Vehicles Across Europe ("JIVE") funding program.

The Urbino 12 hydrogen model fuel cell electric bus (FCEB) – capable of traveling 350 kilometers on a single hydrogen refueling – was unveiled by Solaris at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2019, held in June in Stockholm, Sweden. The bus incorporates an axle with two electric motors and is equipped with a climate control system utilizing heat generated by the fuel cell module. The 12 FCmove™-HD modules – a product that was launched by Ballard at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit 2019 in June – are expected to ship in 2020 and the buses are expected to be deployed with SAS Bolzano by 2021.

Saving the Malayan Tiger Will Require Global Support

PERAK, Malaysia, July 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The Perak State Park Corporation issued a call for global support to mark World Tiger Day 2019 to save the critically endangered Malayan tiger.

Once estimated at 3,000 animals in Peninsular Malaysia, recent studies have shown an alarming drop in tiger populations. Even as the Perak state works with conservation groups to create larger habitats for tigers, the greatest threat to the Malayan tiger is poaching.

WWF Malaysia had previously warned that the "influx of foreign poachers into Malaysia's forests is alarming." This followed an earlier warning that a "quiet invasion by poaching syndicates from Indochina" is due to the disappearance of the wild tiger in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

The current population estimate of the Malayan tiger places their numbers at less than 200 animals in all of Peninsular Malaysia.

The Royal Belum National Park, which is managed by the Perak State Park Corporation, is home to a number of wild tigers. As a critical area for the recovery and conservation of the Malayan tiger, its ambition to double the number of wild tigers in Malaysia needs the support of the global conservation community.

The extent of the poaching problem in Royal Belum was evident in a 12-month project that started in 2017. With funding provided by the Sime Darby Foundation, a five-man foot patrol team was created to complement the current three teams of State Park Rangers.

Consisting of two park rangers, assisted by three indigenous guides from the Jahai tribe, the team was able to dismantle 200 traps and snares and cleared dozens of illegal camps that were set up by the poachers. The Foundation has given additional funding for another five man patrol team in 2018, but this is still insufficient to cover the 117,500 hectares of lush tropical rain-forest that is the Royal Belum National Park. More boots on the ground will be critical in the next five years if the threat of extinction due to poaching is to be effectively curbed.

According to Shah Redza, the General Manager of Perak State Park Corporation, their findings showed clear evidence that organized poaching syndicates were behind the illegal activities in Royal Belum National Park.

Interrogations of arrested poachers have revealed a well-organized drive to poach the last remaining endangered wildlife in Royal Belum.

"We have established up to 15-day patrols, where the team covers selected areas to look for illegal activities. The time constraint is due to the fact that our patrol teams can carry only so much food and supplies on their backs. But what we found out from interrogations of arrested poachers is that they have a ground support system to replenish food supplies for up to five months."

According to Shah Redza, the poachers can stay in the forests for extended periods, as they also consume whatever animals they catch, whereas the park rangers are limited to only foods they brought in.

The State Park requires forward base camps in deep forest so that Rangers can cover more areas without the burden of having to carry heavy rations.

"We have seen cases of barking deer carcasses being used as bait for tigers, but judging from what we found, the poachers had removed parts of it for their own consumption and left the rest of it as bait to attract big carnivores like our tigers."

The success of the initial project has led to extended funding by the Sime Darby Foundation, which will see additional boots added in a second team to patrol the critical habitat of tigers in Royal Belum, Malaysia.

The Perak State Park Corporation is also reaching out to the indigenous peoples of Royal Belum from the Jahai tribe. The outreach has seen the creation of a Council of Elders from the tribe to engage them in the fight against poachers.

The global organization for the preservation of big cats and their habitats,Panthera, was also engaged in July 2019 to provide Specialized Advanced Tactical Training to look for ways to improve the anti-poaching teams in Royal Belum.

The ceremony took place Friday, July 19, just three days shy of the 71st U.S. Girls' Junior Championship, being held at SentryWorld from July 22–27. The architect? None other than world renown golf course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr., who turns 80 during the event. NASA's goal 50 years ago was to prove the agency could land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. The goal now is to return to the Moon in a sustainable way to prepare for the next giant leap – sending astronauts to Mars for the first time ever.
Artemis 1 will launch NASA's Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket around the Moon to test the system and pave the way for landing the first woman and the next man on the Moon in five years, as well as future missions to Mars.





"Similar to the 1960s, we too have an opportunity to take a giant leap forward for all of humanity," said Bridenstine. Engineers recently completed building and outfitting the Orion crew module at Kennedy. The underlying structure of the crew module, known as the pressure vessel, was manufactured at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans and shipped to Kennedy, where teams have integrated thousands of parts into the crew module and conducted tests to certify all of its systems for flight.
Orion's European Service Module, which will provide the power and propulsion for Orion during the mission, also is complete. Contributed by ESA (European Space Agency), the service module was manufactured by Airbus in Bremen, Germany, and shipped to Kennedy in November 2018 for final assembly and integration. Engineers have begun operations to join the crew module to the service module, and teams are connecting power and fluid lines to complete hardware attachment.
Once the two modules are joined, engineers will install a heatshield backshell panel on the spacecraft and prepare it for a September flight inside the agency's Super Guppy aircraft to NASA's Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio. Testing at Plum Brook will ensure the joined modules can withstand the deep space environment.





When testing in Ohio is complete, the spacecraft will return to Kennedy for final processing and inspections. Teams then will fuel the spacecraft and transport it to Kennedy's iconic Vehicle Assembly Building for integration with the SLS rocket before it is rolled out to Launch Pad 39B for the launch of Artemis 1.
Orion is part of NASA's backbone for deep space exploration, along with SLS and the lunar Gateway. During Artemis 1, SLS will send the uncrewed spacecraft – consisting of the crew and service modules – thousands of miles past the Moon for the first in a series of increasingly complex missions. Artemis 2 will be the first of these new missions to the Moon with astronauts on board, followed by Artemis 3, which will launch the next American moonwalkers into a new era of exploration.
Working with U.S. companies and international partners, NASA will push the boundaries of human exploration forward to the Moon. As the celebrations of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 approach, the grandson of a conspirator in the plot 'Valkyrie' has filed a claim for the restitution of the land.
Prince Friedrich zu Solms Baruth escaped the Nazi execution but was arrested on July 21, 1944, imprisoned and tortured for 9 months for his participation in the attempted murder. He signed a document of "power of disposition" in March 1945 while in prison, transferring his 17,300 hectares of land directly to Himmler. 
The German courts upheld the validity of the document "power of disposal" used by Himmler in a failed appeal in 2104 to return the land. 
Lawyers for Solms Baruth believe that newly discovered documents, improperly filed and found by chance in the German State Archives, are the key to resolving the case. An independent scientific analysis of the chemical ink of the "destruction orders" dates the documents within the period suitable for restitution. 
If the case is rejected again, the plaintiff will take it, with Lord Peter Goldsmith, QC , to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Lord Goldsmith said:  "In rejecting the restitution case in 2014, the courts dismissed hearing the testimony of the historian Sir Antony Beevor , among other experts, rejected the report of the British Intelligence Services confirming the arrest and confiscation as a result of the plot of 1944 and did not ask the government to present expert testimonies. "
The lawyers of Solms Baruth have estimated that 10-20% of the outstanding claims within the Brandenburg state archive could be attributed as possible new cases of "restitution" in regard to the actions carried out before May 1945 by the Nazi government (restitution laws do not apply to cases after May 1945).  
Plaintiff Frederick Solms Baruth said:  "Repairing this grave mistake was my grandfather's and my father's last wish. Fighting indifference and obfuscation is my mission and I will not rest until I see how justice is done. My dream is that this land be returned and return prosperity to the Baruth region through investment, reflection and care, to honor the memory of my grandfather. VANCOUVER, July 24, 2019 /PRNewswire/ - Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP; TSX: BLDP) today announced a purchase order from Wrightbus (www.wrightsgroup.com), a leading bus OEM and Ballard partner headquartered in Northern Ireland, for 15 FCveloCity®-HD 85-kilowatt fuel cell modules to power buses for deployment in Aberdeen, Scotland under the Joint Initiative For Hydrogen Vehicles Across Europe ("JIVE") funding program.

The 15 two deck, zero-emission Street Deck fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) are 10.9 meters (36 feet) long and can carry up to 64 passengers. These buses share Press Release Service the same chassis with a battery electric version, but avoid the need for long battery recharging time, instead being refueled with hydrogen in less than 10 minutes. All the Ballard modules in this order are expected to ship by end-2019 and the buses are expected to be deployed with First Aberdeen transit agency by end-2020.
